A quick update from Nicaragua

Covid-19 concerns continue to grow

On Wednesday May 15th, La Prensa (Ni) reported that multiple members of the Masaya team, Las Fieras del San Fernando, were suffering from aches, fevers and flu like symptoms following their return from the town of Bonanza in the Northern Autonomous Region of Nicaragua. Las Fieras played a 3 game series against Costa Caribe in the town of Bonanza from friday May 8th through Sunday May 10th, they won the series 2-1.

The explanation offered by the Masaya organisation is that the hot, humid, wet and high pressure weather conditions paired with the stark contrast of the air con on the team bus is the cause for most of the players reported symptoms and that the aches and tiredness reported by the players is an expected side effect of being exposed to such conditions. The team trained this Wednesday and Thursday without issue.

The Board of San Fernando released a statement on Facebook after the health status and conditions afflicting their players was reported earlier in the week, the statement served to quell the growing fear from fans that the health of their beloved players was in question, saying that the news circulating about the health status of their players was “completely false” and that the team was looking to offer an “excellent series this coming weekend”.

Despite this statement, the San Fernando board submitted a request to the Nicaraguan superior baseball commission (CNBS) on Thursday requesting that the series be postponed or rescheduled to allow their players further rest time. This request was granted only in the form of the postponement of Friday’s game against El Boer, with two 7 inning games to be played on Sunday back-to-back, not the ideal outcome Las Fieras were hoping for.

Guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19 have been released to the Nicaraguan public and are being promoted by the CNBS, these include the promotion of social distancing, disinfecting surfaces and hands where possible and the wearing of masks in public. Though as more stories of those affected by Covid-19 and the number of infections and deaths continue to grow, it is likely the CNBS will have to face some tough decisions regarding the continuation of the Pomares.

We wish all those in Nicaragua, at home here in the UK, and everyone around the world good health and happiness in these trying times. Stay strong friends. We will endure
