SITUATION IN NICARAGUA CONTINUES TO WORSEN

Multiple Series Postponed

Last week The Ministry published a piece regarding the rapidly developing COVID-19 situation in Nicaragua, in regards to the GPO especially. Since that piece was written the situation has simply gotten worse and worse with each passing day, and it is with a heavy heart that we must report the passing of Masaya batting coach Carlos Aranda (pictured left) due to complications related to COVID-19. The Ministry sends its deepest condolences to the Arlanda family and all those connected with the Masaya ball club. Godspeed, Señor.

But the situation does not end there. Masya infielder Norman Cardoze Jr and his father, Masaya manager, Norman Cardoze Sr are both currently interned in hospital in Nicaragua with COVID-19 as was reported on May 18th by a number of journalists in Nicaragua. Since then Norman Cardoze Sr has reported that both his and his son’s health has improved. Wonderful news, but a very close call. That’s still not the end of it, though, also reported on Monday was the fact that 45% of the Masaya team had shown symptoms of COVID, however an update on this particular situation has yet to be released.

CNBS implements new guidelines, postpones two series

An official communication from the CNBS released today outlined increased measures to be taken in order to reduce the risk of infection for coaches and ballplayers. They are as follows “the access of the Players, Technical Corps and Support Corps will be through the main entrance, to take their body temperature. Any player who appears with a temperature outside the established parameters, will not be able to enter the Stadium.”. pretty plain and simple, any player with symptoms will not be allowed into the ballpark, although many fear that this is too little too late given the current state of the situation. Also in the report was the news that both Boer’s series against Costa Caribe in Siuna is postponed due to what they report as “weather factors that will affect the North Caribbean region” although there have been separate reports that suggest the Boer team refused to travel to Siuna due to the risk of contracting COVID, as this is the same place the Masaya team first started to report symptoms. As you’d probably expect, Masya’s series against Chontales this weekend has been postponed to allow the team a recovery period, however there has been no mention of postponing the competition as a whole despite increasing pressure to do so from fans and journalists alike

We’d like to end this update the same way we ended our last one, by wishing all those in Nicaragua, at home here in the UK, and everyone around the world good health and happiness in these trying times. Stay strong friends. We will endure
