The Pomares 2020 Tri-Weekly Update
Issue 1: Gameweeks 1 - 3
RIP Richard Hunter
No one likes sad news, but unfortunately it’s prevalent nowadays. Late on May 1st (Nicaraguan time) Nicaraguan baseball legend Richard Hunter passed away at the age of 51. Hunter won a silver medal for Nicaragua at the 1995 Pan-American games, having started his career in 1988 as a member of the Atlantic coast team in Nicaragua. Hunter retired in 2000 after a 12 year career in which he had a .301avg with 929 hits, 65 home runs and 448 RBI’s. The Ministry sends its condolences to all those in Nicaraguan baseball mourning the passing of this great player.
Week 1 (April 13th - 19th)
The first week of the second stage of La Liga GPO started off with each of the remaining teams selecting their players from the pool of reinforcements available from the first stage (for more info regarding the reinforcement system see our guide to the competition here). All of the reinforcements and the teams they are assigned to can be found below:
The one major highlight amongst the reinforcements is Infielder Jimmy Gonzalez being selected by the Tigres de Chinandega. Gonzalez ended the first stage 5 hits away from being just the 12th player to register 1500 hits in the competition.
The fixture list for the first week can be found below, as well as the table after the first set of series:
Key takeaways from the first round of games are obviously both Boer and Esteli sweeping their respective series and going into the second round unbeaten. Red hot starts from the two standout teams in the competition thus far. On an Individual level, Juan Oviedo became the all time leader in doubles in first division baseball.
Week 2 (April 20th - 26th)
Very little off the field news this week, but on the field the competition rumbled on with the same breakneck pace as we’ve come to expect, below is the series list for the second round of fixtures and the table after the second round:
Takeaways from week 2 are the facts that no team in the competition remains unbeaten, however there is one team that has failed to win a single game in the second stage of the competition, in Carazo having been swept for the second week in a row.
Week 3 (April 27th - May 3rd)
A few acquisitions across the league to start the third week, Eldo Thomas signed as a foreign player for Matagalpa, Rivas signed Victor Duarte and Brian Montiel signed as a foreign player for Chontales. New faces, same fierce competition. This week also provided the day in which Jimmy Gonzalez would get his 1500th hit in the series against Costa Caribe. The fixtures for the third week along with the final table after said fixtures can be found below
Esteli now sits alone at the top of the leaderboard as Boer lost their series against Jinotega 2-1, giving them a one game lead at the top.
